The Championships Wimbledon, attracts the top talent in tennis from every part of the world. As the most prestigious tournament, it attracts a huge prize pool. The last Wimbledon floated a staggering £35,000,000.
As mentioned above, Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament, having started in 1877. The inaugural event contested by 22 players was an all-men affair. One of the interesting things about the 1877 Wimbledon is the fact that to qualify, players had to pay a guinea, and the event took nine days instead of the planned five as rains spoiled the show. Spencer Gore edged out William Marshall to become the first Wimbledon winner in the finals.
After the inaugural Wimbledon, the tournament gained traction and became a success except during the World War I and World War II eras when it was canceled. The event was also canceled in 2020, at the height of the Covid19 pandemic.
Today, Wimbledon is the most coveted tennis tournament. The sports event is normally held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London. The recent Wimbledon was the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, the 134th edition of the tournament.
